Start with usable internal space
Internal dimensions describe the space intended for the contents. External dimensions describe the outside of the finished box and include the construction. The difference depends on board, structure and folds; there is no single allowance for every box.
Measure the complete product
Include caps, lids, protective bags and any other parts that remain inside the box. Specify orientation and the clearance needed for packing and removal. Give units with every measurement.
Allow for the insert and the closure
A fitted tray can occupy space that appears empty on a flat drawing. Closure flaps and opening access may also affect the usable layout. Record the agreed order of length, width and depth on the dieline.
Confirm the assembled sample
Measure and pack the sample, record its revision and confirm which dimensions are controlled in production. Outer shipping or shelf constraints should be specified in addition to product-fit requirements.
