CMYK and Pantone packaging proofs: what should you approve?

Use the right reference for color, material and finishing decisions.

Separate screen color from printed color

A screen emits light, while a printed pack reflects it. Substrate, coating, ink coverage and lighting affect appearance. A digital visual is useful for layout but cannot establish every physical color or tactile detail.

State the color priorities

Identify brand colors, critical solids, images and any spot-color references. Ask which print route is proposed. A spot-color reference is not a promise that different materials will look identical under every light.

Review the finished structure

A carton proof, a flexible film and an uncoated card may need separate approval references. Check white ink, foil, coating, registration and text around folds or seals as applicable.

Record the approved reference

Identify the proof type, material, artwork version and viewing conditions. Keep changes visible and agree which reference governs production. If a sample cannot represent a specific effect, clarify that limitation before approval.
